Design
The new CX-90 is a larger SUV than the CX-9 it's replacing. While a clean and upscale look may not be the most impressive design, it's still nice to look at. Mazda has also provided the CX-90 with a lavish cabin design with room for up to eight passengers to accompany its upscale exterior. However, drivers who opt for the second-row captain's chairs will drop the total seating to seven.
High-end trims like the Premium Plus are wrapped in soft Nappa leather, making for one comfortable vehicle. Base trims like the Preferred are less plush but no less handsomely styled as they use less high-end leather seating.
Along with a spacious and well-appointed cabin, the Mazda CX-90 also has a decent amount of cargo space. Behind the third row, there are 14.9 cubic feet of room. Fold the third row down, and the area expands to 40 cubic feet behind the second row, and with both rear seats folded, you'll have 74.2 cubic feet of space.
Performance
The Mazda CX-90 PHEV uses a 323-hp inline four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery pack to propel itself. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
Though there's no official word from the EPA about the PHEV's fuel economy, we know that the CX-90 PHEV has an EPA-estimated 26 miles of electric driving. Charging at home on a 120-volt outlet will replenish the battery fast, but overnight charging is recommended. According to Mazda, after an hour and a half on a 240-volt connection, the battery can go from 20 to 80 percent full.
Technology
The CX90's plush cabin is accentuated by the various technologies litter throughout. A 10.3-inch monitor is standard, but a larger 12.3-inch infotainment display is optional, and each can be controlled via a click wheel on the CX-90's center console.
Mazda's latest infotainment interface is easy to navigate and relatively intuitive, especially when operating the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. On lower trims, a seven-inch digital gauge and eight-speaker stereo are common. Still, these can be upgraded to a 12.3-inch digital gauge and 12-speaker Bose premium stereo for an additional fee.
Safety
All CX-90s come with a suite of driver-assistance features called i-Activsense, which includes automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. On higher trims, drivers can find safety features like a surround-view camera system and automatic reverse braking, which applies the brakes automatically to avoid a collision with an object behind the vehicle.
